Guest Lecture “Improving Research Skills for Global Challenges” with M. Shahin Sarwar

Surakarta, 23 Juli 2025 — Program Studi Akuntansi, Fakultas Ekonomi dan Bisnis, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) kembali menghadirkan seminar internasional dengan tema “Improving Research Skills for Global Challenges”. Seminar ini menghadirkan narasumber M. Shahin Sarwar, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration in Finance and Banking, Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP).

Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh mahasiswa akuntansi UMS yang antusias mendalami keterampilan penelitian untuk menghadapi tantangan global di bidang akuntansi dan keuangan.

Dalam pemaparannya, Sarwar menekankan pentingnya penelitian dalam memberikan wawasan berbasis bukti (evidence-based insights) yang mendukung pengambilan keputusan strategis, perumusan kebijakan, serta pengembangan organisasi. Ia menyampaikan bahwa dalam era ekonomi global yang penuh ketidakpastian, kompetisi, dan disrupsi teknologi, riset yang kuat sangat dibutuhkan.

Lebih lanjut, Sarwar menguraikan tahapan penelitian mulai dari pemilihan topik dan pengembangan hipotesis, pengumpulan data, hingga analisis statistik deskriptif dan pengujian empiris. Ia juga memberikan penjelasan tentang berbagai metode regresi, seperti linear regression, ridge regression, dan lasso regression, yang banyak digunakan dalam riset berbasis data.Surakarta, July 23, 2025 — The Accounting Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), once again held an international seminar with the theme “Improving Research Skills for Global Challenges.” The seminar featured guest speaker M. Shahin Sarwar, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration in Finance and Banking, Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP).

The event was attended by UMS accounting students who enthusiastically sought to enhance their research skills to face global challenges in the fields of accounting and finance.

In his presentation, Sarwar emphasized the importance of research in providing evidence-based insights that support strategic decision-making, policy formulation, and organizational development. He noted that in today’s global economy—marked by uncertainty, competition, and technological disruption—strong research is essential.

Furthermore, Sarwar outlined the stages of the research process, from topic selection and hypothesis development to data collection, descriptive statistical analysis, and empirical testing. He also explained various regression methods—such as linear regression, ridge regression, and lasso regression—that are widely used in data-driven research.

In addition to discussing research methodologies, Sarwar introduced several emerging research areas in accounting and finance, including ESG and sustainability reporting, blockchain adoption, FinTech, and climate-related financial disclosures. According to him, these areas open new research opportunities for accounting students who wish to contribute to addressing global challenges.

At the end of the session, Sarwar shared practical tips on writing scientific articles for reputable journals, emphasizing the importance of crafting a concise yet comprehensive introduction, conducting a thorough literature review, and presenting data clearly using tables and graphs. He also encouraged students to utilize supporting technologies such as Grammarly, ChatGPT, and Mendeley to enhance their academic writing.

Through this seminar, UMS accounting students are expected to be further inspired to strengthen their research capabilities—not only as an academic requirement but also as essential preparation for competing in the global arena in the future.
